Questions About OccasionalCar  (aka Member Handbook)

What is car sharing? How is it different from car rentals or car pooling? 1

Car sharing is a service that provides members with access to a fleet of vehicles in your neighborhood on an hourly or daily basis. Once you become a member, you can reserve one of our cars via the Internet or telephone and drive it for as long as your reservation. It is not car pooling because it is your vehicle for the amount of time you reserve it. It is not like traditional car rentals because you pick up and drop off the vehicle at the same designated OccasionalCar parking space in your neighborhood - without needing to check-in at an office. Once you are a member, it is 100% self service. You can reserve a vehicle for as little as 60 minutes or as long as you need it.

How does it work? 2

    It is really COOL!

After you become a member, we send you a key fob (sort of like an electronic key). You make a reservation for a car in your neighorhood or anywhere in the city where we have cars via the Internet or over the phone (phone reservations cost $1 per call: 303-800-5468). You can make a reservation for as little as 1 hour, as soon as one minute before you need it. When you arrive at your car, you simply hold your key fob over key fob reader, which is located under the windshield of the car, on the driver's side, and the doors will unlock. You drive the car away for the duration of your reservation and return it to the same parking spot. We charge your credit card for the hours and miles you use. Gas, insurance and the cost of our parking spot are all included. Click Here to learn more

Is a daily rental a better deal than an 8 hour reservation? 3

Our reservation system will automatically bill you at the lower of the daily rate or the hourly rate times the number of hours reserved. So, for example if the hourly rate is $5.99 per hour and you need the car for 10 hours and the daily rate is $47.99 per day - the system will bill you a maximum of $47.99 even though 10 hours @ $5.99 would ordinarily be $59.99. So, we encourage you to only reserve the car for the time you need to free it up for another member who might need it.

How do most members use OccasionalCar? 4

Our members’ use our cars for running errands, grocery shopping, ski trips and visiting friends/family is the most common use of an OccasionalCar vehicle for individuals. The good news is whether you drive 1 time a month or each day, we have a plan that makes sense for you.

Why should I become a member of OccasionalCar? 5

You can save a ton of money! Owning a car is expensive whether you drive it or not. AAA and Edmunds.Com estimate a new car can cost you $7,000 to $8,000 per year ($134 to $154 per week) just for driving 12,000 miles per year. Also, if you don't own a car or you only need a car once in a while, we are the most convenient and affordable car sharing in Denver. Besides - we're fun! Members can manage their own account on the Internet but can be assured that a live person is available to problem-solve 24/7 if ever needed.

How does OccasionalCar benefit the environment? 6

Surveys show that when people share cars, they reduce driving, which in effect reduces traffic congestion and pollution. In addition, we are commited to using fuel efficient cars and hybrids which emit significantly lower CO2 emissions. If all goes well, it is possible that OccasionalCar members may be able to reduce their collective CO2 emissions by 1 million metric tons within a 10 year time frame. That is the equivalent of removing 200,000 privately owned vehicles from the road for 1 year!

How does OccasionalCar benefit the community? 7

Owning a vehicle isn’t always an option or desire for all city dwellers. OccasionalCar is a healthy option for communities that want to reduce traffic/parking congestion, lower transportation costs for everyone and improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods.

Can I pick up a car at one location, and drop it off at a different location? 11

No. OccasionalCar is set up where members pick up and return the car to its original parking spot at the end of each trip. Each car’s technology matches the reservation to the location and it would be difficult to manage final destinations so the next member could easily locate the vehicle.

Are dogs, cats or other animals allowed in the cars? 12

Some members are highly allergic to pet hair. For this reason, we require that pets must travel in pet carriers. The cleaning fee for carrying pet without a pet carrier is $250. (ouch - we never want to charge anyone this fee - so please be careful)

Is smoking allowed in the cars? 13

No! Absolutely not! (Fee for smoking in a vehicle is $250.) Again - we never want to charge anyone this fee - but most of our members are non-smokers and our cost to restore a vehicle to a smoke free environment could cost us more than $250 - so please do not smoke in the cars.

Am I responsible for cleaning the interior or exterior of the cars? 14

Yes and no. We have a cleaning crew that cleans our vehicles once per week and all members are responsible for leaving the car clean. So wipe up any spills, sweep out any debris and DO NOT leave any trash behind. If you are transporting a pet in a carrier, don’t forget to check for pet hair that may have gotten on the seat. Remember, you may not be the next person to reserve this vehicle so keep it clean! If you leave the vehicle so dirty the next member can’t use it, our emergency vehicle cleaning is $100 plus costs. The previous member could be fined and we will schedule an emergency cleaning.

Please use the fuel card at any gas station. The instructions for using the fuel card are in the glove box. Each member will be assigned a PIN to use the card. If the fuel card does not work or a missing fuel card results in you having to use your own money to refuel the vehicle, please email us to let us know and either email us a photo of the receipt via your cell phone camera or US Mail us the receipt with your member number and we will apply a driving credit on your account by applying a driving credit for future reservations.

If I’m sharing with all of these people, how will I be able to get a car? 40

Our business is making cars available to you! That’s our job!!! How do we do it? First of all, our reservation system makes it easy to find available vehicles either by using saved locations, searching by address or by map. If you’re flexible with your date and time, you can view all vehicles in your search and see when a nearby vehicle may be available. We try to “cluster” our vehicles together so if your #1 preferred car is taken, your #2 or #3 choice will be nearby. As well as continually adding new vehicles, we’re also always checking our supply and your demand for certain vehicles and making sure our members’ needs are met. If you ever find you are consistently having a problem finding an available car, tell us in an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

It may turn out that the most expeditious thing for you to do is to make a 1 hour reservation at the next available time slot to retrieve your item. This might be your best course of action especially if you need to gain access to the vehicle on the weekends or evenings. Unfortunately, you will incur the reservation fee for this 1 hour reservation. If you find another member’s belongings, please put them in the glove box or the trunk. If you feel they may be of value and would like an OC representative to keep them safe, please call our 24-hour Emergency operator at 720-259-7809 and let him/her know the vehicle location number and an item description. If you lock your key fob inside the car and are locked out - ultimately you must solve the problem. It may be possible to have an OccasionalCar operator remotely unlock the doors, but this is not always possible. You can call 720-259-7809 to seek assistance. What if the car won't start? 55

Don't panic. Since are cars are fairly new and generally highly reliable Hondas and Toyotas, it is not impossible, but highly unlilkely that there is a real problem with the car. Our technology that locks and unlocks the doors also acts as a security system, so it may be possible that you simply need to "fob" (hold your key fob over the key fob reader until it beeps) the car one more time to enable the ignition. Other "problems" that other members have experienced include: A.) The car needs to be in Park in order to start. Be sure the gear selector is in "P" or "Park". B.) Steering column lock prevents the key from turning. Sometimes you need to attempt to turn the steering wheel slightly clockwise or counterclockwise while attempting to turn the key. If all fails - please call us at 720-259-7809 and we will see if we can help.

What if the car alarm goes off? 56

Don't panic. Our technology that locks and unlocks the doors also acts as a security system, so it may be possible that you simply need to "fob" the car one more time to turn off the alarm and enable the ignition. Oftentimes the car alarm will "time-out" automatically after about 30 seconds - however - the car may still need to "fobbed" again (hold your key fob over the reader until it beeps) to prevent the alarm from going off again.
